California Baby Shower | Old Fashioned Candy Shoppe

{click photo collage to enlarge}

This past Saturday was my California Old Fashioned Candy Shoppe themed baby shower. I can't begin to tell you how touched I was by all the effort my family and friends put into making it a special day for me.. and it really was! It was great to see everyone who could make it. (My friend, Heather, definitely traveled the furthest and it was so great to spend a few days with her!) The food was my favorite growing up (Vince's Spaghetti). We had a craft area where people could decorate onsies and bibs with fabric, appliques, paint, stamps, and other various tidbits. The kids had a bounce house and their own table and crafts. The games were fun and the prizes awesome. Baby Benjamin and I have never felt so loved! ♥

Ten Tiny Fingers and Ten Tiny Toes

I'm about to enter my 30th week and I can't believe we've already gotten to this point! I'm constantly looking at photos online and pinning or bookmarking ideas. Sometime in the next month we'll do my maternity photo session and I'm nailing down newborn photo ideas for my son. I cannot wait.

Preparing for his photos has me thinking about the many newborn sessions I've done for family, friends, or clients. Newborn photo sessions are my very favorite! Capturing all of their new, teeny, tiny, and perfect features from their ten itty bitty fingers and toes to their big round bellies and sweet belly buttons. I love how you can mold them and pose them while they sleep. I love how they smell and how soft they are. It's an honor to capture these moments. Looking back reminds me of how quickly time goes and babies grow.

Last Christmas, when visiting my family here in California, I had an opportunity to visit my friend, Claudia, and her sweet new baby boy, Nathan. I am revisiting photos from our mini photo session and wanted to share a few of my favorites. ♥

Baby Crafting Galore

Still a making-for-baby machine over here! This weekend I made several burp cloths using the tutorial I found here. These were very simple to make and turned out great!

We've also been finishing up projects for my baby shower next week. Candice came over last night to help and today she and my mom made two more candy topiaries, only with dum-dums this time.

We're going to have a onesie and bib decorating station at the shower so today we prepped for that and I created a sample. I made this one of Georgia based on this tutorial. My mom had this heart button for me to embellish it (so cute!)!
In all my making, I put together two baby gift sets to list in my etsy shop. Each of these sets includes two custom burp cloths and two coordinating soothie pacifier clips. I hope you like them!

DIY: Gumdrop Topiary Tutorial

The theme of my upcoming baby shower is Old Fashioned Candy Shoppe and everything (that I've seen) is looking super cute so far! There are a few last minute projects that I've been helping my mom with, including these candy topiaries. We have two more to make using the Dum-Dums but today we made the ones with spice drops. This is a simple, though time consuming, project.

What You Need:
* Spice Drops
* Foam Balls (we used 6 inch)
* Toothpicks (and scissors to cut them with)
* Ribbon &/or Tulle
* Wooden Dowels (cut to desired height; we cut ours in half)
* Hot Glue Gun
* Pot/ Planter
* Foam Square & Some sort of weights (we used river rocks)
Directions: Select a ribbon to wrap your wooden dowel with. Leave a few inches blank at the top and bottom. Secure with a hot glue gun.
Create your hole with the wooden dowel so that you can add the candy around it. Cut your tooth picks in half (probably optional but it worked for us).
If you do cut your toothpicks in half you should use the pointy side to push in the candy and the cut side into the foam ball (opposite of pictured). I realized after this first row that it might cause a splinter and we definitely do not want that!! ;) Continue adding candy until you've completely covered the foam ball. You can keep your ball in place by placing it in the pot that will later be your base. If your ball is still rolling around you can keep it in place by laying a paper towel down on the pot and then setting your ball on it. This worked really well for me!
Use hot glue to secure the wooden dowel to your gumdrop-covered ball. Do the same on the bottom to secure it into the foam square. The ball is surprisingly heavy so be prepared to balance the weight with something. We used river rock.
Cut two 4 foot strips of tulle. Gather into a big bow and use the ends to loop around and tie it together. Create two of these and use them to cover the river rock by tying them to the dowel.
Viola!!

Benjamin's Quiet Book

I've been meaning to share this with you for a while! My mom made this for Baby Benjamin and gave it to me at my baby shower in Atlanta. I love it so much and can't wait to share it with my son! He's going to love it!! ♥

Ta-da!

I have finished the scallop baby bunting! I just love these fabrics and I think it turned out super cute! I can't wait to hang it on Benjamin's bassinet at the hospital! :)

WIP: Scallop Baby Bunting

I have a cold or allergies (or something) that is making it very difficult to fall asleep and stay that way. This morning I was up from 3:30 until after 6 (boo!) but took full advantage of it by perusing online and pinning. ;) This afternoon I went by the store for fabric, with my next few projects in mind, including a birthday gift for my [almost] 2 year old nephew. More on that later. Tonight I started my own version of this scallop edge bunting. I loved the idea of having a little something to hang around the bassinet at the hospital! ♥

DIY: Soothie Pacifer Clips

I am totally late in the game but I have just recently jumped on the Pinterest bandwagon. I know, I know, where have I been right? I've spent the last 24 hours pinning away and it's taken my making-for-baby desires to a whole new level! I have several new projects open on my browser, including one I tackled today. I followed this universal pacifier clip tutorial to create 4 soothie clips. The two not pictured are just waiting on me to pick up more suspender clips tomorrow. This quick project couldn't have been more simple and it was so rewarding! ♥

Before & After | Baby Cradle

As promised, here are the before and after photos of the baby cradle. It was quite a challenge trying to figure out how to write his name on the inside! I ended up putting it up so the headboard was lying flat and I was facing the inside. I lightly wrote his name in pencil first since I was having to do it upside down and then went over it with paint. It was quite a sight to see, I'm sure! I am really pleased with how this turned out! I'm already anxious to start on a new project but first I need a nap. ;) ♥

WIP: Baby Cradle

Hello, friends! I know it's been a while, hasn't it?! What an insane month+ it's been too. I still want to share photos from my road trip back to California with my mom but another time. I've been busy here trying to get settled and set up for baby. It's been a whirlwind to be sure.

I have been in major nest zone and dying to make. Last week I added to my etsy shop including 3 new checkbook covers. On the baby front I washed all of his teeny new clothes. This weekend was my first without plans since I've been back and I wanted to spend time working on my baby project list.

I mentioned on my list that I got to decorate this cradle (I previously referred to it as a bassinet) and I've been so anxious to get to it!! My papa made this for my uncle over 36 years ago and I was the 2nd in a long line of cousins to use it. Usually my grandma decorates it but she wanted me to decorate it in my own style. I couldn't be more thrilled to oblige. It came to me completely white and the first thing I did after touching up a few spots was to go pick out fabric for the mattress pad. I wanted to choose the fabric first so I would know how to paint it and it what colors. I chose this adorable animal print initially. I must really be into these colors right now because I had just picked up paint in the right colors only about a week before! I spent most of yesterday painting the end of the cradle with plans to paint a [relative] copy on the other end.

I couldn't get this apple green chenille fabric I saw at Joann's out of my head, so I asked my mom what she thought about me doing a quilt style for the top of the mattress cover. We ended up back at Joann's to pick it up and also selected a green polka dot flannel and aqua textured satin fabric. The two covers I already had (and will use as back ups) were made in the style of a pillowcase so I basically just copied that. Afterward I got to thinking I should have made it in the style of this pillow I made years ago because it's a snugger fit and just overlaps in the back but that's ok.. I'm happy with the way this turned out.

My mom suggested that I write his name on the inside of the headboard which I've just done today. There are still a few finishing touches I want to make on it and then I'll be sure to share the final result! With scrap fabric today I made a matching lovey (it's super cute!). It just needs the binding which I have yet to purchase. I'm loving the way everything has turned out so far! ♥
